Guess What I Got in the Mail?

Just before leaving out the door of my house, I almost trip over a package. I love that delivery folks plant packages at your front door and dare you to find them on your own. I’m in a hurry, so I don’t have time to open it, but I think I know what it is. I take it with me to the firehouse, and once I get there, I open it up. What you see pictured is what I got—the latest edition of the IFSTA Essentials textbooks for Firefighter I and II.

Most people probably don’t get excited about getting textbooks. Textbooks mean homework, quizzes, and tests. These books are different for me. These textbooks represent just over 2 years’ worth of work. As a part of a committee of folks in the fire service, and with the book-making help from people at IFSTA, I have a chance to inform people entering the fire service about things they need to know. I can imagine it now. A student somewhere out there in fire service sitting in a class, looking at one of these books and saying to the instructor, “Why do we have to know this? It’s boring! When do we get to go do stuff?” Be encouraged, instructors; we have given you what you need, to give the students what they need, even if they don’t know they need it yet.

Thanks to all of the people who supported me by accepting me into the process, allowing me to attend meetings, and treating me as an equal. It was an honor.

After years of being an instructor in the military and the and the fire service, I realized I needed to improve my delivery. My students needed me to improve delivery. But how do I improve my delivery? Simple. I finally took a member of Toastmasters up on the invitation to come to a meeting. It wasn't long until I joined. Along the way of improving my skills at delivering a message, I came to understand that of all the ways to get a point across, telling stories is the best way to get it done. Around this time, another friend from Toastmasters told me about The Moth monthly story telling shows. What better way to test out my theories on storytelling. It's in my travels there to the shows that I found more and more shows, and classes, and events centered around storytelling. Despite how many people know about the storytelling world, not many people know about the storytelling world. So now, I'm out to tell the world about storytelling.
